EventID 668 - Group Type Changed [Win 2000 / 2003]
Indicates that type or/and scope of "target" group was successfully changed by "caller" user.

This event occurs only on Domain Controllers.

There are two types of groups in Active Directory:
  • Distribution, or in other words security disabled, groups are for distribution lists in Exchange and cannot be assigned permissions or rights.
  • Security, or security enabled, groups can be used for assigning permissions, rights and as distribution lists.
There are 3 scopes of groups in Active Directory: Local, Global, Universal. Scope identifies the extent to which the group is applied in the domain tree or forest.
